tcull2Newly inaugurated State Senator Tom Cullerton capped his first week of session in the Illinois Senate by lending his vote to keep alive a state construction program that has invested billions in roads, bridges, and schools and put thousands of people to work.

“I look forward to working together to resolve some of our state’s most controversial topics,” Cullerton said. “We must reach across the aisle to find solutions that will benefit those we represent.”

On Wednesday, Cullerton met again with the Firearms Working Group on to discuss details for upcoming concealed-carry legislation. Guest speakers included Richard Pearson, executive  director of the Illinois State Rifle Association; NRA lobbyist Todd Vandermyde; Colleen Daley, executive director of the Illinois Coalition Against Handgun Violence; and Tom Vanden Berk, CEO of Uhlich Children’s Advantage Network and board member with Brady Campaign/Million Mom March.

Another highlight of the week included Gov. Pat Quinn’s annual State of the State address on Wednesday. As the entire General Assembly met in the House, legislators and the public heard what to expect this spring session. In his speech, the governor promoted public safety legislation, pension reform, job creation and better governmental ethics.

Cullerton also supported Go Red For Women day, organized by the American Heart Association to raise awareness of heart disease in women.  Legislators were asked to wear red to support the event. Cullerton wore a red tie.

The week ended with the governor signing legislation that maintains the state’s investment in job creation programs. HB 190 continues the state’s construction program that has put thousands to work building roads, bridges and schools throughout Illinois. The legislation also restores some of the severe funding cuts to the Department of Children and Family Services and prevents layoffs that would have impacted needy families and children.

The Senate will meet again on Feb. 13.
