SilverBeat2rVILLA PARK – State Senator Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) hosted two Silver Beat seminars in conjunction with the office of the attorney general to inform residents of the best practices to avoid becoming a victim of fraud, scams and identity theft.

“The pandemic has opened more opportunities for scammers to take advantage of Illinoisans, especially older Illinoisans,” Cullerton said. “Your own judgement is the first line of defense against fraud, and these seminars helped people learn what to look out for when it comes to scammers and fraudulent business practices.”

From phishing emails to illegal robocalls, scammers are getting creative with how they take advantage of their victims. The COVID-19 pandemic has only made these issues worse, with some scams asking people to give their bank account information to receive fraudulent stimulus checks, invest in fake vaccine companies and more.

Thursday’s Silver Beat seminars gave residents an opportunity to learn about potential scams going around Illinois, as well as resources to use if one suspects they have fallen victim to a scam. An expert from the office of the attorney general gave presentations and took questions focused on helping older Illinoisans protect themselves.

“I was glad to see so many people come out to learn about how to protect themselves and their loved ones from fraud,” Cullerton said. “The presentations featured some great resources, and if they prevent even just one person from becoming a victim, they will have done their job.”
